Have you ever looked at the ingredients in your food or self-care products and wondered what half substances are? Have you suffered from an illness and instead of finding the root cause, you were simply prescribed a medication to mask the symptoms? If so, then you’re in good company. I’d suffered from various illnesses that never seemed to go away and blindly trusted my doctor that the medications would “make it better”. It wasn’t until I gave birth to my first child that I truly started questioning the definition of “wellness” that I had been raised with. Sure my family ate mostly home cooked meals growing up, my mom planted a garden every spring, and even raised our own chickens and occasionally pigs but I still struggled with my health. Since delving into holistic wellness, I’ve made numerous changes to our diet and daily life that’ve not only alleviated the illnesses I was suffering from, but we’ve hardly gotten sick at all in comparison to before we made these changes. So, what exactly is holistic wellness? Holistic wellness is caring for not just your physical wellbeing, but also your mental state, social and emotional health, and spirituality. This can look like reducing exposure to toxins in your life, growing/raising your own food, meditating/self-relfection, spending time in God’s Word, relieving stress wherever possible, maintaining interpersonal relationships, or even utilizing homeopathic remedies when possible as opposed to taking prescriptions that tend to have numerous side effects.
What is Holistic Wellness?
The mind, body, and spirit all working harmoniously together. Sounds pretty amazing right? So many people spend their lives out of sync that it becomes their normal. They get used to being sick and tired all the time or feeling constant anxiety and depression or just accept that they’re going to have to be on medication for their chronic illness for the rest of their life. This is no way to live. It’s surviving, but not thriving. It can take time to achieve a level of homeostasis within yourself, especially after a lifetime of wear and tear, but it is possible.
Signs You’re Ready to Embrace Holistic Living
You might be feeling an inner pull toward a more natural, intentional way of living—but how do you know you’re truly ready to embrace holistic wellness? One of the first signs is a growing awareness of how your lifestyle affects your health—maybe you’ve started questioning the ingredients in your food, the chemicals in your home, or the impact of stress on your body. You might feel burnt out, overwhelmed, or disconnected and sense that a more balanced, mindful approach could help you reclaim your energy and well-being. Perhaps conventional solutions to health concerns aren’t working for you, and you’re searching for natural remedies, better nutrition, or a deeper connection to your body’s needs. A shift in priorities is another clue—you may find yourself drawn to simpler, more intentional choices, like swapping fast food for home-cooked meals, replacing synthetic products with natural alternatives, or making time for mindfulness and self-care. Holistic living isn’t about perfection—it’s about aligning your lifestyle with what truly nourishes you, inside and out. If you’re feeling this shift, it’s a sign that you’re ready to take the next step toward a more vibrant, balanced, and conscious way of living.
5 Simple Steps to Start Your Holistic Wellness Journey
Embracing holistic wellness begins with small, intentional changes that nurture your body, mind, and spirit.
- Upgrading your diet is a foundational step—focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods like organic fruits and vegetables, healthy fats and proteins, and probiotic-rich fermented foods to support gut health and energy levels. Hydration is just as important, so opt for filtered water and herbal teas over sugary drinks.
- Beyond what you eat, consider reducing toxins in your home by swapping conventional cleaning supplies, synthetic fragrances, and non-stick cookware for natural, non-toxic alternatives. A simple change like using vinegar and baking soda for cleaning or investing in a water filter can significantly reduce daily exposure to harmful chemicals.
- Equally vital is mindfulness and stress management, as chronic stress can disrupt overall well-being. Simple practices like meditation, deep breathing, journaling, or spending time in nature can calm the nervous system and improve mental clarity. Find different techniques, tools, and hobbies that relax you and utilize those to manage your stress.
- Movement is another key pillar—whether it’s pilates, stretching, gentle walks, or whatever your preferred method of exercise is, incorporating daily movement helps balance energy, reduce stress, and enhance physical health. It can also prevent and manage chronic illness and improve your mental state and overall functionality of your body.
- Lastly, connecting with nature and spirituality fosters emotional well-being and inner peace. Whether it’s practicing grounding (walking barefoot on grass), prayer, or simply unplugging from screens, connecting with yourself and nature has a way of realigning us with our natural rhythms.
With small, sustainable shifts in these areas, you’ll begin to experience the deep connection between mind, body, and environment—unlocking a lifestyle of balance, vitality, and holistic healing.
Simple Swaps for a Healthier Home
✅ Ditch Synthetic Fragrances: Swap commercial air fresheners and candles for essential oil diffusers, beeswax/coconut wax candles, or simmer pots with natural ingredients like cinnamon and citrus peels.
✅ Upgrade Your Cleaning Products: Use vinegar, baking soda, and castile soap for effective, non-toxic cleaning. Brands like Branch Basics and Truly Free offer great pre-made alternatives.
✅ Filter Your Water: Tap water can contain chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants—investing in a high-quality water filter can significantly reduce exposure.
✅ Switch to Non-Toxic Cookware: Replace Teflon and aluminum cookware with stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic for a safer kitchen.
✅ Choose Natural Beauty & Skincare: Look for products with clean, organic ingredients and avoid parabens, sulfates, and artificial dyes. Brands like Beautycounter, Dr. Bronner’s, and RMS Beauty are great starting points.
By making these small but impactful changes, you’ll create a healthier environment that supports your holistic wellness journey.
